Why simple return misleads you
Most people judge a portfolio by dividing gain by amount invested. That works only when every rupee went in on the same day. The moment you invest gradually — which is what a SIP is — the simple percentage stops describing anything meaningful, because money added last month has had no time to grow while money added three years ago has.
Twelve monthly instalments of ₹10,000 across a year, worth ₹1,30,000 at the end. You invested ₹1,20,000, so the simple return reads 8.33%.
But the first instalment was invested for twelve months and the last for barely one. Weighted for the time each rupee was actually at work, the annualised return is 15.97% — nearly double what the simple calculation suggested.
Neither figure is wrong. They answer different questions. Simple return tells you how much you gained; XIRR tells you how hard your money worked while it was invested. Only the second is comparable against a fixed deposit rate or a fund's published return.
XIRR, CAGR and absolute return
| Measure | Use it when | What it ignores |
|---|---|---|
| Absolute return | Quick sense of total gain | Time entirely |
| CAGR | One investment, one entry, one exit | Any further additions or withdrawals |
| XIRR | Multiple investments on different dates | Nothing — it is the general case |
For a single lumpsum, CAGR and XIRR give the same answer. ₹1,00,000 growing to ₹1,50,000 over three years is 50% absolute, but 14.47% a year on both measures. The two only diverge once cash flows arrive at different times, and then XIRR is the one to trust.
Σ [ cash flow ÷ (1 + r)^(days ÷ 365) ] = 0
Investments count as negative, current value as positive
There is no closed-form solution — the rate is found by iteration, which is why spreadsheets and tools compute it rather than you doing it by hand.
Worked example: two years of SIP
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Monthly instalment | ₹5,000 |
| Number of instalments | 24 |
| Total invested | ₹1,20,000 |
| Current value | ₹1,45,000 |
| Absolute return | 20.83% |
| XIRR (annualised) | 19.62% |
Here the two numbers land close together, which happens when the holding period is near two years. Over shorter periods XIRR runs well above absolute return; over much longer ones it falls below, because absolute return keeps accumulating while the annualised rate does not.
What else a tracker should tell you
Asset allocation
The split between equity, debt and gold drives most of your long-run outcome — more than individual stock selection does. A common starting rule is to subtract your age from 100 for an equity percentage, though it is a rough heuristic rather than advice.
| Holding | Value | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Equity mutual funds | ₹5,50,000 | 55.0% |
| Direct stocks | ₹1,50,000 | 15.0% |
| Debt and fixed deposits | ₹2,00,000 | 20.0% |
| Gold | ₹1,00,000 | 10.0% |
| Total | ₹10,00,000 | 100% |
Concentration
Worth checking how much sits in your single largest holding, and whether several funds hold the same underlying stocks. Owning four large-cap funds is not diversification — it is one position wearing four labels, with four expense ratios.
Drift from target
If equity was meant to be 60% and a strong year pushed it to 72%, your risk has risen without any decision on your part. Rebalancing back to target is what converts a plan into something you actually follow.
Tax on redemption
| Asset | Short term | Long term |
|---|---|---|
| Listed equity and equity funds | Under 12 months, 20% | 12 months+, 12.5% above ₹1,25,000 a year |
| Debt funds | Slab rate | Slab rate |
| Gold and gold funds | Slab rate | 24 months+, 12.5% |
Two practical consequences. First, each SIP instalment has its own purchase date, so a long-running SIP holds a mix of short-term and long-term units at any moment. Second, the ₹1,25,000 equity exemption resets every financial year, so redeeming in tranches across years rather than all at once can save real tax.
What this tracker cannot account for
- Live prices. Values are what you enter. Nothing is fetched from an exchange, so figures are as current as your last update.
- Dividends and payouts. Dividends received are separate cash flows. If you have taken payouts rather than reinvesting, XIRR calculated on contributions alone will understate your return.
- Bonus issues, splits and rights. Corporate actions change your unit or share count without a cash flow, and need manual adjustment.
- Brokerage, STT and stamp duty. Transaction costs are not netted off; your realised return is slightly below what is shown.
- Look-through holdings. The tracker sees funds, not the stocks inside them, so overlap between funds is not visible here.
- Tax on redemption. All returns shown are pre-tax.

XIRR, CAGR

Frequently asked questions
What is XIRR and why does it matter?
XIRR is the annualised return on investments made at different dates, weighting each rupee by how long it was actually invested. It matters because a simple gain-divided-by-invested calculation ignores time entirely. Twelve monthly SIPs of Rs 10,000 worth Rs 1,30,000 after a year show a simple return of 8.33%, but the XIRR is 15.97% because the early instalments were invested far longer than the later ones.
What is the difference between XIRR and CAGR?
CAGR assumes one investment on one date and one exit, so it works for a lumpsum but breaks the moment you add or withdraw money in between. XIRR handles any number of cash flows on any dates and is the general case. For a single lumpsum both give the same answer — Rs 1,00,000 growing to Rs 1,50,000 over three years is 14.47% on either measure.
What should I track in a portfolio tracker?
Four things beyond current value. The XIRR of each holding and of the portfolio overall, so returns are comparable against a fixed deposit or a fund's published figure. Your asset allocation across equity, debt and gold. Concentration, meaning how much sits in your largest holding and whether several funds hold the same stocks. And drift, meaning how far allocation has moved from your target since you last rebalanced.
What is a good asset allocation in India?
There is no single right answer — it depends on your age, income stability, goals and how much decline you can tolerate without selling. A widely used starting heuristic is to subtract your age from 100 for an equity percentage, putting a 30-year-old at roughly 70% equity. Treat it as a conversation starter rather than a rule, and remember that the allocation you can actually stick with during a fall matters more than the theoretically optimal one.
Are direct stocks better than mutual funds?
They are different, not strictly better or worse. Direct stocks give full control and no expense ratio, but require research, time and the temperament to hold through falls. Mutual funds provide professional management and instant diversification for a fee of roughly 0.5% to 2% a year. Many investors hold both — funds as the core and a smaller direct allocation alongside.
How is my portfolio taxed when I sell?
Listed equity and equity mutual funds held under 12 months are short-term and taxed at 20%; held 12 months or more they are long-term and taxed at 12.5% on gains above Rs 1,25,000 in a financial year. Debt fund gains are taxed at your slab rate regardless of holding period. Gold and gold funds become long-term after 24 months at 12.5%.
Does holding four mutual funds mean I am diversified?
Not necessarily. If all four are large-cap funds they will hold largely the same underlying companies, so you are paying four expense ratios for what is effectively one position. Genuine diversification comes from holding different asset classes and market segments, not from counting the number of funds you own.
How often should I rebalance my portfolio?
Once a year is enough for most people, or when an asset class drifts more than about 5 to 10 percentage points from its target. Rebalancing more often adds transaction costs and capital gains tax without much benefit. The purpose is to bring risk back to what you chose, not to time the market.
